UK's Guoqiang Yu: Pioneering Cost Effective Optical Imaging for Healthcare Solutions

Read: 998

Guoqiang Yu, Ph.D., joins the F. Joseph Halcomb III, M.D. Department of Biomedical Engineering within UK's Stanley and Karen Pigman College of Engineering as a distinguished professor since 2007. He has earned recognition as one of Elsevier’s top 2 most-cited researchers worldwide in 2023 for his pioneering work on developing cost-effective optical imaging technologies, which are noninvasive methods to assess the health and function of tissues and organs.

Dr. Yu serves as the primary inventor behind numerous patents that utilize innovative techniques for diagnosing brn injuries, cardiovascular diseases, Alzheimer's disease, cancer, woundsburns, reconstructive tissue issues, and diabetes. His portfolio includes:

  1. A wearable, eye-loupe fluorescence imaging device patented in 2019 to d in the intraoperative identification of tumor margins with Dr. Thomas Pittman in neurosurgery.

  2. An optical tomographic system developed for noninvasive and noncontact brn, burn, wound, and reconstructive tissue imaging, which is currently undergoing commercialization efforts backed by the NIH and industry partnership.

Dr. Yu's work focuses on applying advanced low-cost optical technologies to address healthcare challenges across Kentucky and beyond. In collaboration with other medical professionals at the College of Medicine, his innovative devices offer superior features compared to competitive alternatives, potentially making significant impacts in Kentucky's healthcare sector.

The University Research Professors program highlights excellence among UK faculty members who tackle scientific, social, cultural, and economic issues globally while addressing local challenges. A one-year award of $10,000 accompanies the distinction, with recipients participating in additional events organized for this initiative.

In 2022, the University of Kentucky was recognized as a Best Employer for New Grads by Forbes and labeled a Diversity Champion by INSIGHT into Diversity for its commitment to cultivating a community that values every member. As a state flagship land-grant institution, UK's mission is to serve the Commonwealth through education, research, creative work, service, and healthcare innovations.
