Transforming the Future of Healthcare: The Impact of Medical Technology

Reflecting on his visit to the Faculty of Science as a junior college student, Dr. CHAN Taw Kuei was captivated by the Science Vision program - a series of lectures covering Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics. Little did he know that this would ignite his passion for science, leading him back to NUS for both undergraduate and postgraduate studies, eventually joining the faculty as an educator.

Dr. CHAN now brings us into the realm of HSI 2014 - Science, Medical Technology and Society, a module under the College of ities and Sciences CHS Common Curriculum set to debut in August 2022 Semester 1 of Academic Year 20222023. It is designed for students from CHS as well as those from other collegesfaculties.

This comprehensive module provides an overview on the critical role medical technology plays in mntning health and promoting well-being, saving lives, and fostering sustnable healthcare practices. The curriculum introduces fundamental concepts from physics and biology alongside their integration into contemporary medical technologies and techniques used in various medical imaging and treatment processes.

Furthermore, this course emphasizes the significance of clinical evidence that underpins established medical facts, distinguishing it from unverified clms, medical procedures, misinformation, and fake news. It also delves into how medical technology intersects with societal issues such as chronic disease prevalence, environmental pollution, and healthcare affordability.

Drawing on his own experience from visiting the faculty years ago, where he found himself struggling to follow the lectures due to lack of understanding, Dr. Chan has kept these experiences close at heart for inspiration in teaching that combines motivation and technology enhancement.

In his leisure time, Dr. CHAN enjoys watching e-sports and savoring coffee, which help him remn steadfast as he navigates the pursuit of new knowledge.

Dr. Chan holds dear this reminder of his early learning challenges to continuously improve his educational approach as a professor, nurturing his interest in motivational teaching techniques and technological advancements.

In recent developments, NUS CHS is poised to host its inaugural Career and Internship Fr for 2024, ming to connect students with industry opportunities. Meanwhile, cutting-edge initiatives like A Cut Above have been implemented to elevate academic standards, while the NUS Science Symposium continues to serve as a platform for collaboration and celebration in scientific disciplines.

Sustnability efforts, like reducing food waste in hospital settings, are being prioritized through innovative approaches such as precision farming bolstered by technology. This underscores NUS's commitment to pioneering solutions that benefit society.
