FIU Collaborates on Breakthroughs in Health and Energy Sustnability through NSF Engineering Research Centers

In a highly competitive process, the National Science Foundation NSF has awarded nearly $80 million total to establish four new Engineering Research Centers ERCs. These centers m to address national challenges in health and energy sustnability. Florida International University FIU is proud to be part of two pioneering ERC initiatives.

Out of more than 200 applications, the NSF selected four teams from diverse institutions across the nation. This recognition underscores FIU's commitment to groundbreaking research in engineering and medicine through its College of Engineering Computing.

The selection of FIU as part of these ERCs is a testament to our faculty's innovative work and leadership, sd FIU Provost and Executive Vice President, Kenneth G. Furton. Led by Ranu Jung, the College has demonstrated its capacity for strategic proposal preparation.

Each of the new ERCs spans five years at an investment of approximately $20 million per center, with potential for a total funding of up to 10 years and $40 million.

The first ERC, PATHS-UP Precise Advanced Technologies and Health Systems for Underserved Populations, focuses on developing affordable health devices and systems that cater to the needs of underserved communities. The emphasis will be on diabetes and cardiovascular diseases in these technologies' development. Texas AM University leads this project with FIU, Rice University, and UCLA as its partners.

The second ERC, CELL-MET Nanosystems Engineering Research Center for Cellular Metamaterials, revolutionize cardiovascular care by synthesizing personalized heart tissue suitable for clinical use. This groundbreaking work could enable the creation of large, multi-functional sections of the heart and other tissues through nanotechnology. Boston University leads this effort alongside FIU and the University of Michigan, along with six affiliate institutions globally.

The NSF ERC program is designed to catalyze innovation in education and industry partnerships, sd Andres Gil, FIU Vice President for Research and Economic Development. At FIU, we are dedicated to addressing global challenges through research that leads to practical solutions.

NSF Director France Cordova highlighted the impact of ERCs over more than three decades as a driver of innovation, competitive edge preservation, and substantial economic growth.
